The Ritual Guide
The eleven phases of Hajj in order — from before you leave home, to your last circuit around the House. Each phase: when, where, how, the du'as, common mistakes, and the differences between the four Sunni madhāhib where they matter.
- Your homeBefore You Leaveقبل السفرThe Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not have sexual relations and does not commit sin, will return as the day his mother bore him." (Bukhari 1521) Begin Hajj before you board the plane — with sincere intention, settled affairs, and a clear understanding of the rites.
- At the miqatIhram — Entering the Sacred StateالإحرامIhram is the state of consecration in which Hajj rites are performed. It is entered at one of the five miqāt boundaries set by the Prophet ﷺ, with a specific ritual: ghusl, then donning ihram garments (for men) or modest clothing (for women), then formal niyyah at the moment of crossing the miqat. From that moment, the prohibitions of ihram apply.
- Masjid al-Haram, MakkahTawaf — Circling the Ka'bahطواف القدوم / طواف العمرةUpon entering Makkah, proceed to Masjid al-Haram. For Tamattuʿ pilgrims, this tawaf is the Tawaf al-Umrah, which completes the Umrah portion. For Ifrād and Qirān pilgrims, it is Tawaf al-Qudum, a welcoming tawaf which is sunnah. Seven counter-clockwise circuits around the Ka'bah, starting and ending at the Black Stone corner.
- Masjid al-Haram — Saʿi corridor between al-Safa and al-MarwaSaʿi — Between Safa and Marwaالسعي بين الصفا والمروةSeven trips between the hills of al-Safa and al-Marwa, commemorating Hajar (Hagar) RA running between them seeking water for her infant Ismaʿil. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Make saʿi — Allah has ordained it for you." (Ahmad). For Tamattuʿ pilgrims, this saʿi completes the Umrah; another saʿi will follow Tawaf al-Ifadah on the 10th. For Ifrād/Qirān, this saʿi (if done now with Tawaf al-Qudum) is the saʿi of Hajj and does not need to be repeated.
- MakkahFirst Halq / Taqsir (Tamattuʿ pilgrims)الحلق أو التقصير بعد العمرةFor Tamattuʿ pilgrims only: after completing saʿi of the Umrah, the head is shaved (halq) or the hair is trimmed (taqsīr). This formally ends the Umrah portion of Tamattuʿ. All ihram prohibitions are lifted until the 8th, when ihram is re-entered for Hajj. Ifrād and Qirān pilgrims do NOT exit ihram here; they remain in ihram until the 10th.
- 8 Dhul Hijjah · Mon May 25, 2026Yawm al-Tarwiyah — Day of Wateringيوم التروية — الثامن من ذي الحجةOn the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, the pilgrim re-enters ihram for Hajj (if Tamattuʿ — Ifrād/Qirān remain in ihram throughout) and departs for Mina, about 5 km east of Makkah. The day is called Tarwiyah ("watering") because pilgrims historically watered themselves and their animals here in preparation for Arafat. Spend the day and night in Mina, praying the five prayers in their proper times, shortened (qaṣr) but not combined.
- 9 Dhul Hijjah · Tue May 26, 2026Yawm ʿArafah — The Day of Arafahيوم عرفة — التاسع من ذي الحجةThe Prophet ﷺ said: "Hajj is Arafah." (Tirmidhi 889) — meaning that whoever stands at Arafah at any point in the valid window has secured the essence of Hajj. The wuqūf (standing) at Arafah is the greatest pillar of Hajj. Without it, Hajj is invalid. The valid window is from zawal (true noon) on the 9th until the dawn of the 10th. Spend this entire afternoon and evening — the holiest hours of your life — in du'a, dhikr, weeping, and repentance.
- 9 Dhul Hijjah · Night of Tue May 26 → Wed May 27, 2026Muzdalifah — Night of the 10thالمبيت بمزدلفةAfter sunset on the 9th, depart Arafat for Muzdalifah. The journey is short but traffic is intense. Upon arrival, combine Maghrib (3) and ʿIshāʾ (2 — shortened) at the time of ʿIshāʾ. Sleep in the open under the stars; this is the mabīt at Muzdalifah, a wājib of Hajj. Collect 49 (or 70) pebbles for the days of stoning. Pray Fajr early on the 10th, then make extensive du'a at the Mashʿar al-Haram until just before sunrise, then depart for Mina.
- 10 Dhul Hijjah · Wed May 27, 2026Yawm al-Nahr — Day of Sacrificeيوم النحر — العاشر من ذي الحجةThe 10th of Dhul Hijjah — ʿEid al-Adha. Four major rites in a specific order: (1) Stoning Jamrat al-ʿAqabah with seven pebbles, (2) Sacrificing the hady (sheep, goat, cow share, or camel share), (3) Halq (men shave) or Taqsir (trim), (4) Tawaf al-Ifadah and saʿi (if not done before). The Prophet ﷺ said the order is preferred but, if reversed by accident or necessity, there is no sin (Bukhari 83).
- 11 Dhul Hijjah · Thu May 28 — Sat May 30, 2026Ayyām al-Tashrīq — Days of Tashreeqأيام التشريق — الحادي والثاني والثالث عشرThe three days after Yawm al-Nahr — 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul Hijjah. These are the "days the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the days of eating and drinking and remembrance of Allah" (Muslim 1141). Spend the days and nights in Mina. After zawal each day, stone all three Jamarat in order: Sughra → Wusta → ʿAqabah, with 7 pebbles each. Two options for departure: Nafr Awwal (leave after the 12th, before sunset) or Nafr Thānī (stay for the 13th and complete the stoning).
- Masjid al-Haram, MakkahTawaf al-Wadāʿ — The Farewell Tawafطواف الوداعThe final act before leaving Makkah. The Prophet ﷺ said: "No one of you should leave until his last act is with the House." (Muslim 1327). Seven counter-clockwise circuits around the Ka'bah. No ramal, no idtibāʿ, no saʿi after. Two rakʿat at Maqām Ibrāhīm. Then depart Makkah.
