If something goes wrong

The fiqh of slip-ups. Common mistakes during Hajj, their rulings according to the four Sunni madhāhib, and the remedies (dam, fidya, kaffāra, or redo). When in doubt about a specific situation, consult a qualified Sunni scholar — these are study notes.

  1. Invalidates Hajj

I missed the wuquf at Arafah entirely — I never stood on Arafat between zawal of the 9th and Fajr of the 10th.

The wuquf at Arafah is the greatest pillar of Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Hajj is Arafah" (Tirmidhi 889). If you did not stand at Arafah at any moment between zawal of the 9th and the dawn of the 10th, your Hajj is invalid. You must complete the remaining rites as if performing Umrah (exit ihram with halq/taqsir), then make up the Hajj the following year.

    • Complete the remaining rites of this trip as an Umrah (i.e., perform tawaf and sa'i, then halq/taqsir).
    • Make up the Hajj (qadā') in a later year.
    • Sacrifice a sheep (dam) in compensation, distributed in the Haram.
  2. Requires dam (sheep)

I left Arafah before the sun set on the 9th (after arriving in the daytime).

According to the majority (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali), a pilgrim who stands at Arafah during the day must remain until sunset. Leaving before sunset is a violation, and a dam (sheep) is required. The Hajj remains valid. According to the Hanafi school, the wuquf is fulfilled by any moment during the valid window, but leaving before sunset still requires dam.

    • Sacrifice a sheep in the Haram and distribute the meat to the poor.
hanafi: Required to return to Arafah before sunset if able; dam if not.
Shafi'i: Dam required, but Hajj remains valid.
  3. Requires dam (sheep)

I did not spend the night at Muzdalifah on the night of the 10th.

Mabit at Muzdalifah is wajib according to the majority (sunnah muakkadah per some Hanafis). Missing it without a valid excuse requires a dam. Valid excuses include: serving the elderly, women and children leaving after midnight, and medical necessity — these do not require dam.

    • Sacrifice a sheep in the Haram.
    • If you had a valid excuse (e.g., escorting weak family members), no dam is required.
  4. Requires dam (sheep)

I did not spend the night at Mina on one or more nights of Tashreeq (11th, 12th, 13th).

Mabit at Mina is wajib. Missing all the nights requires a dam. Missing one night without excuse requires partial fidya (feed one poor or sacrifice a partial share). Many contemporary scholars permit pilgrims who cannot find space in Mina to camp in surrounding areas (e.g., Aziziyah) without dam, provided they made sincere effort.

    • Sacrifice a sheep if all nights were missed without excuse.
    • Feed a poor person per missed night, if one or two nights only.
  5. Requires dam (sheep)

I missed stoning the Jamarat on one of the days of Tashreeq.

Rami is wajib. If you missed it on a given day, do it the same day before sunset if possible. If you missed it entirely (i.e., did not stone before leaving Mina), a dam is required.

    • Make up the rami the same day before maghrib (the most efficient remedy).
    • If completely missed: sacrifice a sheep in the Haram.
    • For weak/elderly: appointing a proxy (wakeel) to stone on your behalf is permitted and incurs no dam.
  6. Requires dam (sheep)

I broke an ihram prohibition (cut hair, used perfume, wore stitched clothing, etc.) — but no intimacy.

For most ihram violations (other than intimacy and hunting), the pilgrim has a three-option fidya from the Qur'an (2:196):

    • Sacrifice a sheep in the Haram and distribute meat to the poor.
    • Feed six poor persons (half a sā' each, approximately 1.5 kg of staple food per person).
    • Fast three days.
  7. Invalidates Hajj

I had sexual intercourse with my spouse before the first tahallul.

The first tahallul (al-taḥallul al-aṣghar) is achieved by performing the two ihram-related rites of the 10th: stoning Jamrat al-ʿAqabah and halq/taqsīr (shaving or trimming). Hanafi and Maliki: both are required. Shafiʿi and Hanbali: any TWO of stoning + halq/taqsīr + Tawaf al-Ifadah qualify. The hady (sacrifice) is wājib of Hajj but is NOT one of the tahallul-triggering acts in any madhhab. Once first tahallul is reached, most prohibitions are lifted EXCEPT sexual relations with one's spouse. Intercourse before this point invalidates the Hajj according to the consensus of the four madhāhib. The pilgrim must: (1) complete all remaining rites of this Hajj anyway; (2) make up the Hajj the following year; (3) sacrifice a camel in the Haram (or a cow, or seven sheep) and distribute the meat to the poor. (Source: classical fiqh manuals across the four schools; IslamQA fatwa #106594.)

    • Complete the remaining rites of this Hajj (do not abandon).
    • Make up the Hajj (qadā') next year.
    • Sacrifice a camel (or a cow, or seven sheep) in the Haram.
  8. Requires dam (sheep)

I had sexual intercourse with my spouse AFTER the first tahallul (after stoning + halq/taqsīr) but BEFORE the second tahallul (before completing Tawaf al-Ifadah and saʿi if required).

The second tahallul (al-taḥallul al-akbar) is reached upon completing Tawaf al-Ifadah and saʿi (if saʿi is owed). Sexual relations between first and second tahallul require a sheep sacrifice (dam) but the Hajj remains valid.

    • Sacrifice a sheep in the Haram and distribute meat to the poor.
  9. Requires dam (sheep)

I left Makkah without performing Tawaf al-Wada'.

Tawaf al-Wada' is wajib for non-residents of Makkah. If you have not yet left the miqat, return and perform it. If you have crossed the miqat, a dam is required. Menstruating women are exempted — no dam required.

    • If you have not yet crossed the miqat, return to perform it.
    • If you have left, sacrifice a sheep in the Haram.
    • Menstruating women: exempt, no dam.
  10. Must be redone

I performed fewer than 7 circuits in tawaf, or fewer than 7 trips in sa'i.

Tawaf and sa'i are pillars; the count must be exactly 7. If you are unsure mid-ritual, build on the lesser (e.g., if unsure whether you completed 4 or 5 circuits, treat it as 4). If you discover later that you fell short, you must complete the missing circuits/trips — even returning to Makkah if you have already left.

    • If still in Makkah: return to the Haram and complete the missing circuits.
    • If you have left Makkah: return to complete; the Hajj remains in an incomplete state until you do.
  11. Must be redone

I am a woman and my menstrual period began before I could perform Tawaf al-Ifadah.

A menstruating woman cannot perform tawaf. She must wait until her period ends, perform ghusl, and complete Tawaf al-Ifadah — even if this delays her departure. Tawaf al-Ifadah is a pillar; it cannot be skipped or substituted. If your flight cannot be changed and her group is leaving, contemporary scholars permit her, in cases of true necessity, to take medication to delay her period — but the medical advice should be sought in advance.

    • Wait until the period ends, then perform ghusl and Tawaf al-Ifadah.
    • In severe necessity (group leaving, no return possible): consult a scholar; some permit performing the tawaf with a sanitary pad and a dam in compensation as an emergency ruling.
  12. Requires dam (sheep)

I intended Tamattu' but did not enter ihram for hajj on the 8th — or I am confused about which type of hajj I am performing.

Establish clarity: most pilgrims from outside the miqat perform Tamattu' (umrah first, exit ihram, re-enter on the 8th for hajj). If you completed umrah and exited ihram, you must enter ihram again for hajj on the 8th. If you went to Mina on the 8th still in ihram (i.e., never exited), you are effectively performing Qiran or Ifrad. Tamattu' requires a sheep (hady) — this is not a dam for a mistake, it is a thanksgiving sacrifice (Qur'an 2:196).

    • Confirm your intention with a knowledgeable person in your group.
    • For Tamattu': purchase a hady voucher (the standard system in Saudi Arabia).
